Ghee Hup Nutmeg Factory is located near Balik Pulau on Penang Island, an area long known for nutmeg cultivation. The factory traces its roots to family-run orchards and traditional processing methods, offering visitors a glimpse into how nutmeg fruit is transformed into pickles, juices, oils and ointments.
Nutmeg here is used nose-to-tail. The flesh can be candied or juiced, while the seed and mace are dried for spice and medicinal use. Oils distilled from the seed have long been used in balms for aches and colds. By maintaining these techniques, the factory preserves knowledge that once travelled global spice routes but is now at risk of being overshadowed by imported products.
In the terroir economy, Ghee Hup connects Penang’s agricultural past with contemporary visitors. Each bottle or jar carries not just flavour, but a reminder of the farmers, seasons and hillsides that sustain this small but enduring industry.
