Founded in the 1970s in Balik Pulau, Lean Seng continues the labour-intensive process of making traditional bedak sejuk by hand. Broken rice is washed and soaked for days, fermented in clay pots, then rinsed repeatedly before being mixed into a paste and dropped into tiny pellets for sun-drying. Natural additions such as pandan or other botanicals offer subtle scent and extra benefits.
Bedak sejuk has long been used in Malaysia as a cooling face powder, soothing skin after long days in the sun and helping with mild blemishes. Its production demands clean water, stable weather and a great deal of patience. Lean Seng’s decision to keep these methods, instead of mechanising everything or switching to synthetic ingredients, preserves both a beauty tradition and a local micro-economy.
Through a terroir lens, each jar of bedak sejuk holds the story of Penang’s climate, rice culture and family trade. It shows how heritage remedies can still have a place in modern routines when they are made with care and integrity.
