The River Speaks

Empurau &
Engkabang

by Kendy Mitot

This work explores the harmony between nature and life along the rivers of Sarawak, focusing on the relationship between the Empurau fish and the Engkabang fruit.

As these Engkabang fruits fall from the forest canopy into the flowing river, they become nourishment for the Empurau, reflecting a natural cycle of giving and balance.

The composition blends geometric patterns and organic forms, echoing fish scales, water currents, and seed shapes. Each element reflects the interdependence of river, forest, and all living beings within this ecosystem.

The Empurau, prized for its rarity and ecological significance, becomes a symbol of purity and sustainability. This artwork highlights the quiet intelligence of nature, where seasonal rhythms guide both survival and cultural practices.

It serves as a reminder that true harmony is possible when human life flows with the land, respecting the delicate relationships that have long sustained both nature and community.
